20th August 1966: Celtic v St Mirren – League Cup Part Two

Match Report

The Side

As expected, Jock Stein announced the same side as beat Clyde in midweek. One difference, though, was that Davie Cattenach was listed as the substitute instead of Charlie Gallagher.

Season 1965-66 had been a poor one for St Mirren. The Buddies had finished 3rd bottom – only one point ahead of Morton, who were relegated – but in the course of the league campaign the team lost 82 goals!

That poor performance on the pitch was reflected off the pitch, as the club had lost more than £9000 in takings and would be hoping for a good crowd at Parkhead to help replenish their coffers.

The Teams

Celtic: Simpson, Gemmell, O’Neill, Murdoch, McNeill, Clark, Johnstone, McBride, Chalmers, Auld and Lennox. Sub – Cattenach

St Mirren: Thorburn, Murray, Clark, Pinkerton, Kiernan, Wilson, Aird, Treacy, Adamson, Gemmill, Hamilton.   Sub – Bell

A very good crowd of 31,500 was at Parkhead for the match. It included me, as usual, there to watch the match, of course, but in particular the form of the fullbacks.

From that point of view, it was a disappointing match as Tam and Pumper got little to do, the ball spending most of the game in the Saints half and in fact, very near the goal area.

It had been a romp against Clyde in midweek and this turned out to be much the same, four goals in the first half and another four in the second. They came as follows ;-

5 mins
after a nice move involving McBride, Chalmers and Lennox, Booby got the first by shooting hrough the keeper’s legs.  1-0 Celtic

24 mins
Jinky Impeded; Joe scores from the penalty. 2-0 Celtic

26 mins
Joe makes it 3-0 Celtic

44 mins
Joe right on target with a quick shot for his hat-trick.  4-0 Celtic

46 mins
Guess who makes it 5-0? Yes, Joe again.

56 mins
Bertie gets one. 6-0 Celtic

72 mins
Bobby L gets one on target for 7-0

78 mins
An offside decision was not given and inside-forward Tracey reduces the deficit 7-1 Celtic

82 mins
A cross from the left was not dealt with by the defence and Tracy got another.  7-2 Celtic

86 mins
Stevie Chalmers gets into the act for what will prove to be the final goal. 8-2 Celtic
